Review
Good things come in small packages so the saying goes, and the No. 13 restaurant is a great example of that. Though the restaurant fronts the busy Dillwyn street in the city centre, once you have entered through the frosted glass doors, you immediately get a sense of the relaxed atmosphere. The restaurant only opened in May 2006 but has enjoyed great success, not to mention the good write- ups it has received, and has to be one of the top choices for a pre-theatre meal.

The décor is surprisingly simple, contemporary with a slightly rustic twist, and this is reflected in the food. While their partners Sarah and Becky and manager David ensuring things run smoothly out front, chefs and co-owners John and Paul have drawn on their experience of cooking in Europe, Asia and the Pacific Rim, to provide unfussy and truly tasty food equally well suited to a casual lunch as it is to a special evening out.

An enormous lamb shank with a root vegetable mash and a rich port, rosemary and red currant jus immediately creates a mouth watering spectacle when brought to your table, and it smells just as good! There are, as you would expect, plenty of lighter fish dishes such as Seafood Piri Piri, allowing you to tuck into an enticing starter of Smoked Goose Breast on an Oriental noodle salad infused with Sesame Seed Oil, Sweet Chilli, Soy Sauce and Rice Wine. If you still have room, the Butterscotch Crème Brulee is a favourite that keeps people coming back for more. Often, dessert menus tend to be too ‘safe’; not here, and you only need to try the Eton Mess to see how unusual and addictive desserts and puddings should be.
